Westminster is a cabaret, old chum!
The Seven Deadly Sins, Kurt Weill’s ‘sung ballet,’ is at the heart of this ambitious concert. Soprano Measha Brueggergosman is welcomed back by Anne Manson as we get our cabaret on in Westminster Church!
This music was shaped by the period leading up to and including the Second World War. Its composers were profoundly affected by its horrors; Gideon Klein was an organizer of cultural life in Theresienstadt concentration camp, and Pavel Haas was a Czech composer who perished in the Holocaust.

“The program has its roots in ‘Entartete Musik,’ which was banned by the Nazis who labeled it ‘degenerate.’ Many of these ‘degenerate’ composers were writing some of the most interesting music of the time, blurring the lines between classical music and jazz. Weill was particularly noted for this. Harmonically, Klein was using some of the same techniques.”
