Hot concert
in a cold climate!
For this concert, the MCO looked north — north to a changing landscape, where there are few constants other than the sky above. s
Jim Hiscott’s new work,The Song of the Stars, is based on a Passamaquoddy text, and was written especially for our guest artists: soprano Maria Luz Alvarez (left) and guitarist Rodrigo Muñoz, and of course, the MCO strings!
Schnittke’s Concerto grosso conjures up a frozen landscape, and who better to perform this work than Karl Stobbe and Kerry DuWors, both veterans of the prairie winter! Favourite guest conductor Scott Yoo joins in this tribute to the North.
David R. Scott on the Beaufort sea
Another new work comes from David Raphael Scott. In May of 2008, he spent a chilly week on the icebreaker Amundsen in the Beaufort Sea (that's him in the photo above). He was in the company of scientists from all over the world involved in the University of Manitoba's Circumpolar Flaw Lead study examining the melting of the polar icecap. Hear how this once-in-a lifetime experience has shaped the new composition he has brought home to us.
